What Is an Extensive Factory Audit (EFA)?

An Extensive Factory Audit (EFA) is an on-site evaluation of a supplier’s facility, quality management system, and production capability, carried out by a trained third-party auditor before you commit to placing an order. It goes by a few other names in the industry – manufacturing audit, supplier audit – but the scope is the same: to confirm that a factory can actually deliver what it claims to, in the quantity you need, at the quality level you require, and within your shipping timeline.

If you’re weighing your first order with a small supplier, a Simple Factory Audit is often enough. Once real volume, tooling investment, or a long-term contract is on the table, the extra day of an EFA gives you a much more defensible basis for the decision.

How to Read Your Extensive Factory Audit Score?

A recent EFA report from our files illustrates how the scoring works in practice: out of 116 total available points across all 11 categories, the factory scored 58 – a 50% result, which our reporting scale flags as “Needs Improvement.” The breakdown mattered more than the headline number: the factory scored well on Facilities (9 of 11) and Social Accountability (16 of 17), but scored low on Quality Control System (4 of 18) and Final Inspection & Testing (1 of 10) – meaning the physical plant looked solid, but the systems meant to catch defects before shipment were weak.

This is the kind of detail a pass/fail checkbox can’t give you. A low overall score doesn’t automatically mean “walk away” – it means you know exactly which part of the operation needs a corrective action plan, or a closer look with a Pre-Shipment Inspection once production is underway.
