What Are Common Test Items And Test Standards For Food Contact Materials?

Common Terms and Definitions in Food Contact Materials

  • Food contact materials and products

Under normal conditions of use, various materials and products that have been or are expected to come into contact with food or food additives (hereinafter referred to as food) or whose ingredients may be transferred to food, including food production, processing, and packaging, Packaging materials, containers, tools and equipment used for food in the process of transportation, storage, sales and use, as well as inks, adhesives, lubricants, etc. that may directly or indirectly contact food. Does not include detergents, disinfectants, and public water delivery facilities.

  • Composite materials and products

Food contact materials and products are made up of two or more different materials or materials of the same material combined by assembly, welding, or inlay.

  • Total Migration Amount

The total amount of all non-volatile substances that migrate from food contact materials and products to the food simulants that come into contact with them is measured in milligrams of non-volatile substances per kilogram of food simulants (mg/kg), or The number of milligrams (mg/dm²) of non-volatile migrating substances that migrate out of the contact area of square decimeter. For special food contact materials and products for infants and young children, it is expressed in mg/kg. (Refer to Total Migration Test Instrument)

  • Total Migration Limit (OML)

The maximum allowable amount of all non-volatile substances that migrate from food contact materials and products to the food simulants that come into contact with them, in milligrams of non-volatile migrants per kilogram of food simulants (Mg/kg), or the number of milligrams (mg/dm²) of non-volatile migrants emigrating per square meter of the contact area. For special food contact materials and products for infants and young children, it is expressed in mg/kg.

LFGB Test Requirements For Common Materials:

Please refer to the article: LFGB Test Requirements For Common Materials

  1. General plastic products: Generally, it requires full migration and sensory testing.
  2. PVC plastic products: It requires a comprehensive migration test, sensory test, vinyl chloride monomer test, and peroxide value test.
  3. PE plastic products: It also requires sensory tests, comprehensive migration tests,s, and peroxide value tests. Apart from these, chromium content test, zirconium content test, and vanadium content test.
  4. PP plastic products: Comprehensive migration test, zirconium content test, chromium content test, vanadium content test, sensory test are required for PP plastic products.
  5. PS, ABS, SAN, Acrylic plastic products: Apart from the sensory test, total migration test, and organic volatile total, these products require peroxide value test, (VOM).
  6. PA, PU plastic products: Comprehensive migration test, sensory test, and peroxide value test are common. Additionally, the aromatic amine migration test is conducted.
  7. PET plastic products: Comprehensive migration test, peroxide value test, zinc content test, lead content test are usually conducted on pet plastic products.
  8. Silicone rubber products: Comprehensive migration test, organic volatile content, sensory test, peroxide value test, organic tin compound test are required to attest LFGB certification on products of silicone rubber.
  9. Paper products: Five chlorine phenol tests, hg of heavy metals (such as lead, chromium, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent) release quantity, formaldehyde content test, antibacterial composition migration test are required for the paper product. Besides, the azo dye test is performed on colored paper products.
  10. Non-stick coating products: Sensory testing, comprehensive migration test, and different types of dissolubility test such as phenol test, formaldehyde test, aromatic amine test, hexavalent chromium (Vl) test.
  11. Metal, alloy, and electroplating products: Heavy metal dissolution [like lead, nickel, cadmium, chromium ] test along with the sensory test.
  12. Baking paper products: Appearance, antibacterial composition migration test, thermal stability, sensory test, polychlorinated biphenyl test, and formaldehyde dissolution test are required baking paper products.
  13. Wood products: Wood products require a pentachlorophenol test and sensory test.
  14. Ceramics, glass, and enamel products: The content of lead cadmium dissolution was usually tested in contact with food.
